Generally, dental insurance plans have exclusions, for which any reimbursement would not be made.

In such cases you will have to arrange for the out-of-pocket costs once the manager of the dentist and the insurer are both familiar with the pre-determined out-of-pocket costs.

Dental insurances are taken in order to retrieve the expenses related to dental care.  Routine dental care and treatments could be quite expensive that most of the time it prevents people from getting regular care.

Dental care nowadays revolves around hygiene visits, cosmetic dentistry and restorative dental care.  Usually dental insurance plans cover fewer expenses, compared to medical insurances.

Plans available

When it comes to dental insurance plans, there is a wide range of choices available.  These plans will be shaped based on the number of visits, X-rays, treatments and other services that are offered.  There are certain plans which reimburse the patient only when the least expensive option is chosen.  Some others do not cover any pre-existing conditions.

Some employers support a flexible spending account option for their employees, so you need to check with your employer if you can receive this option as well.

Following are some choices available for Dental Insurance Plans:

  • Indemnity Plan – this type of insurance gives you the opportunity to choose your dentist.  These can be fee-for service plans and usually comes with co-payment options and several limitations.  You make a fixed flat fee for the visit but there will be an annual limit on spending for dental care.
  • Self Insurance Plan – these are very much like the indemnity plans but you do not have the chance to choose the dentist.
  • Closed Panel Plan – this type of plan puts a limit on the number of dentists that are available and also limit the coverage only to a several facilities within a specific group.
  • Capitation Plan – under these plans, there are specific dentists recommended for specific intervals of time.  The dentist will have a contract, under which he/she will be paid whether service was granted or not.
  • Preferred Provider Organization (PPO) – these plans cover only a certain set of dentists who allow themselves to be paid a lower rate.
  • Direct Reimbursement Plan – this plan will enable employees to receive direct reimbursements from their employers for dental care.
  • Dental Care Service Plan – these plans obtain the services of a non-profit organization made up of dentists.

What's included in the coverage?

You should have a clear idea as to what dental expenses are covered from your dental insurance and what is not. It’s a wise move to have a good knowledge about the dentist’s fees prior to receiving any treatments as different dental insurance covers provide different levels of reimbursements for dental care.

Under some dental insurance plans, the waiting time before receiving dental care is reduced.
